Music Program at Village Elementary School
All students at the Village School are required to participate in the music program. 4th grade students can choose to join orchestra or chorus. 5th grade students can choose to join either band, orchestra, or chorus. Students in band and orchestra receive one lesson per week in small groups as well as two large ensemble rehearsals per week. Lessons rotate so that students do not miss the same class each week. Students in chorus have two large ensemble rehearsals per week.
Choice of Instruments: String instruments are offered in 4th and 5th grade. Band instruments (woodwinds, brass, and percussion) are offered in 5th grade only. Instruments offered in 5th grade band include: flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.
Requirements: Students are required to practice a minimum of 120 minutes per week, attend lessons and rehearsals, and bring their instruments and music to all sessions. Parents need to oversee practice, sign the practice records weekly, and ensure that students have their instruments in school when needed.
Registration: Students will select their ensemble (band, chorus, or orchestra) in Genesis over the summer before the school year begins. There will be a special orientation meeting in September for parents of students who have selected band or orchestra. These parents must plan to attend one of the scheduled meetings.
Student Responsibilities: When a student leaves the classroom for lessons, the classroom instructional program continues. Students are responsible to complete assignments covered during the class period. Each music student should develop a “buddy system” in the classroom to ensure that all assignments are received. The classroom teacher will clarify assignments for students when assistance is required.
